In support of The STRONG Veterans Act of 2022, the VA has established National Buddy Check Week, scheduled for October 21–25, 2024. This initiative aims to strengthen peer connections, improve mental health, and enhance access to both VA and non-VA resources. Family members, caregivers, and survivors of Veterans are also encouraged to participate in this effort.

During Buddy Check Week, Veterans are urged to reach out to one another, as some may be thriving while others might need encouragement. Simple gestures, such as a call, text, or coffee break, can make a significant impact. The Buddy Check serves as a call to action for Veterans to reaffirm the bonds that connect them across the country.

Before reaching out, it’s beneficial to complete training that equips you to recognize signs of distress and provides information on available resources to share if needed. By taking the pledge, participants can subscribe to ongoing resources and stay connected throughout the year, contributing to meaningful support.

Veterans can discover new ways to reconnect with their buddies through platforms like Together We Served’s Buddy Finder and RallyPoint. The VA encourages everyone to share their stories and experiences regarding their buddy checks until October 30. Forums will be held on Together We Served and RallyPoint, where Veterans can ask questions and share their connections with peers, friends, and family from their service days.

Additionally, the VA’s Veterans Experience Office VetResources Community Network is hosting the inaugural Veteran Buddy Check Summit in collaboration with the American Red Cross. This half-day event will feature a Buddy Check town hall with VA Secretary Denis McDonough and presentations from organizations such as The American Legion, American Red Cross, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, and American Corporate Partners.

The summit will be streamed live from the American Red Cross Headquarters in Washington, D.C., on October 22, 2024, from 9:00 to 11:15 a.m. ET, providing a platform for discussion and support.
