Every year more than 870,000 Americans die each year from heart disease. The number one cause of deaths for most groups, heart disease affects all ages, genders, and ethnicities. Risk factors include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and excessive alcohol use.
Do you know how to keep your heart healthy? You can take an active role in reducing your risk for heart disease by eating a healthy diet, engaging in physical activity, and managing your cholesterol and blood pressure. This is a great chance to start some heart-healthy habits!
For American Heart Month, the AHA and other organizations reinforce the importance of heart health, the need for more research and efforts to ensure that millions of people live longer and healthier.
Here are just a few examples of how you can improve your heart health:
- Exercising
- Eating healthy
- Not smoking or vaping
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Controlling blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure
- Getting regular checkups
This month, each week we are going to focus on a different heart health topic: controlling your blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol and weight, heart healthy eating and eliminating unhealthy habits for good ones.
Love your heart so it can work its best for you!
